The replica at the Pateo do Collegio: simulacrum or memoir?

Abstract

This paper was written to detail and analyze the implications for São Paulo's city memoir and its collective sense of place, resulting from an exhaustive process of radical landscape changes of place, that took place between 1890 and 1970, made of demolishing, building, demolishing, rebuilding the central construction of the Pateo do Collegio. In detailing the reconfiguration of the Pateo do Collegio in transpositions from the Mud City to Coffee Metropolis to Industrial City is expected to emphasize that the construction of a replica of the past confirms the need for heritage conservation to safeguard the collective memory.
