Resumen

Estudamos os furtos de bens culturais - obras de arte e/ou documentos históricos- no Brasil. Os furtos de bens culturais impõem perplexidade aos pesquisadores, às instituições e à sociedade, dificultam a construção de análises rigorosas. A divulgação destas informações cria a falsa imagem que vivemos uma situação nova. Ao contrário, desde o século XIX são anunciadas medidas que buscam controlar os furtos e a circulação destes bens. Esta situação sugere que não está sendo preservando o patrimônio público. Na raiz do problema encontramos a fragilização do Estado brasileiro, o desmonte de suas instituições, a ganância que atravessa a sociedade e o individualismo que deseja particularizar bens de natureza intrinsecamente coletiva para se tornarem bens de valor monetário e de mercado, bens que na lógica do mercado possuem um preço. Os acervos culturais de caráter público pertencem ao cidadão, precisando da guarda do Estado. Palavras chave: Acervo público. Patrimônio. Furtos de bens culturais. História social. ABSTRACT From the headline to the left bottom corner note: the theft of public assets, the privatization of the citizens’ collections The present study focuses the theft of cultural assets — works of art and/or historical documents — in Brazil. The theft of cultural assets brings about puzzled feelings to researchers, institutions and society, hampering the production of unbiased analyses. The disclosure of this information creates the false impression that we live a new situation. Rather, since the nineteenth century measures are announced seeking to control the theft and circulation of these assets. This suggests that public assets are not being properly preserved. At the root of the problem is the weakening of the Brazilian Government, the dismantling of its institutions, the greed and individualism throughout society, making private the heritage that is, inherently, of collective nature, i.e., public, by assigning them market and monetary value, bringing to that “property” the logic of the market: these are assets and, as such, have a market price.
