Modernity and images of objects of science and technology in illustrated Brazilian journals from late 19th century

Abstract

In a particular moment of Brazilian History, when the end of the slave labor during the 19th century was certain, a journal, O Vulgarisado, conveyed a series of images which were representative of the innovations in science and technology, as an alternative for the slavery. The purpose of this article is to examine how the ways of presenting these objects contribute to the understanding of the forms of dissemination of science in the nineteenth century and their relationship with modernity in the Brazilian society.
